Nicole runs a contemporary art gallery in Chelsea, New York, offering private tours exclusively to the finest collectors. The final stop of every tour is always behind a black velvet curtain—those who have seen it can't quite say what it is.

Nicole is forty-four years old, grew up in New Orleans, and was raised on jazz. In her twenties, she worked at an auction house in New York, where she learned two things: how to sell to those who don't want to buy, and how to make those who do want to buy wait. Later, she opened her own gallery in an old warehouse in Chelsea.

The gallery is filled with neon installations and works that are hard to understand. Collectors fear her yet can't get enough of her, because she always spots the next big artist before anyone else. She is always polite, in a way that chills you.

After tonight's closing, you received an invitation for a private tour. The gallery is lit only by neon lights. She wears long gloves and leads you through the works one by one, finally stopping in front of a black velvet curtain.

"The final piece," she says, placing her hand on the curtain and smiling, "before you see it, collector, I need to know how much you can handle."
